Liberty Bar

 <modified>2008-11-07T09:30+00:00

If you have never experienced vertigo then go to the. No you won’t suffer this dreadful dizzy spell from the food but from the frighteningly pronounced tilt of the entire building suffered from a flood in 1921. The Liberty Bar is a San Antonio landmark and has been in some form of continuous business operation since 1890. The house on the outside leans west. But the floor inside the house tilts decidedly east thus creating a funky carnival crooked-fun house that instills a charm that keeps locals coming back. A tag line on an NPR radio program says that the restaurant is “over 100 years old and looking every minute of it.”
The menu could be described as somewhat New American with hints of the Southwest and the Mexico interior. It features a Basic Menu comprised of a quite lengthy list of appetizers salads sandwiches and grill items as well as a Daily Menu that changes daily (of course) on which you can find a good selection of specialties. Although the Quail with Green Mole or the Filet with Cream of Huitlacoche looked very appealing from the Daily Menu my wife and I decided to order from the Basic Menu instead with mixed results.
The restaurant makes all their breads and desserts in-house. Although I am instantly endeared to any restaurant that serves me bread when I am seated. I was a little disappointed in that it was fairly dry and lacked flavor (white wheat and rye). We did order two items from the Daily Menu the Leek and Mushroom Soup and an appetizer called Minguichi. The soup was nothing special it simply tasted like a bland celery soup with a bit of a kick (probably from a serrano or jalapeno pepper) though full of button mushrooms onion red bell pepper and a ton of black pepper. The Minguichi is a cheese dip made with a blend of cheeses and grilled poblano and red bell peppers. The waitress admitted not knowing all the cheeses used in the mix but Muenster gouda and feta are at least three of them. The result of using these types of cheeses to make a dip is that the oil separates from the cheese creating a curdled mass. The taste of the dip was tasty nevertheless although I could have used more peppers. But the texture left a lot to be desired. The home-made tortilla chips however were excellent.
My Roasted Leg of Lamb Sandwich with Aioli Morita was a disappointment. The rye was dry and the crust was toasted into bricks. The lamb was sinewy and lacked the robust taste I was expecting. The aioli was almost non-existent but the side of flavored mayo (chipotle?) helped. I’m not big on potato salad and this recipe didn’t do much to help. Granted it is one of the better ones I’ve had given that the creamy dressing was light and there were good sized chunks of hard-boiled egg. Nevertheless it was a little boring and does nothing to add to the dish.
My wife’s dish on the other hand made up for the disappointments quite handsomely. Her Chicken Breast with Achiote was cooked to perfection and had the soft texture of well-done fish. The seasoning complemented the char-grilled taste of the chicken and came with a side of a tangy and garlicky cilantro chimichurri. The dish came with a side of grilled red cabbage and onion slaw that was a perfect companion to the chicken.
My experience this time around convinces me that my next visit will include an order from the grill. The Liberty Bar is an institution. The mixed crowd of long-time customers attests to its popularity not only as an architectural oddity but for its food and its desserts. The wait staff are laid back and will make you feel like a guest invited to eat in this historic home.
I also had something you can spread on your bread. Was it babaganush? That doesn’t sound like something I would have. Can’t remember but their bread is great.

Nashville area restaurant/food supply?

 <modified>2008-03-03T21:43+00:00

My husband and I are moving within the year to Gallatin. TN which is about a half hour northeast of Nashville. Are there any stores in the general Nashville area that correspond to a chain in the West called "cause to be perceived and Final"? Smart and Final is a kind of combo store selling restaurant supplies (no large appliances or extensive dinnerware) and food items. Nowhere near as big as a Costco/Sam's Club and not as trendy or specialized as Trader Joe's but very useful nonetheless. It's a place I'll miss... Thanks for any responses.
There's a place on Charlotte Avenue in West Nashville that was formerly the public outlet of Robert Orr/Sysco foods. Society ladies went there to buy tartlet shells by the inspect and whole tenderloins and giant lasagnas to answer 50 for the church supper. It's called Nashville Cash and Carry now. I think and the selection is similar. Restaurant-size cans jars big- sizes of things. It's on the historic quaint move of Charlotte near 46th Avenue and Richland lay. That what you're looking for?Nearby (well within about 10 blocks) is an Aldi which is a German-based chain selling basic groceries (and some extras) for about 30 percent less than traditional grocery stores. They don't displace a lot of fancy or niche products -- no fresh herbs or flavored coffees or whole wheat dredge or sugar-free fruit spread -- but there are occasional surprises like blue cheese crumbles soy milk and smoked almonds. Gallatin is a long way out of town as you experience and really it's a world unto itself. My cousins live in Gallatin and I only saw them once a year at most. A lot of Gallatin-ers hardly ever alter it to Nashville. It's actually just a close to go to Kentucky where the sales tax on food is displace.
Oh. convey YOU so much fluffernutter! I was afraid no one was going to say to this. I construe this to my husband (born in Jonesborough and lived most of his life in Johnson City) and he was surprised that Robert Orr/Sysco used to undergo an outlet. He's used that company in his business. For certain we will check out Nashville Cash and Carry as it sounds very similar to Smart and Final. One of the SF products we just like and use all the measure is called "manufacturing cream". It's like heavy whipping cream but it has not been subjected to ultra-pasteurization. It tastes so much better than the beat you can sight in grocery stores. Restaurants and bakeries use it all the time. We'd seen the Aldi stores but had no idea what they were. We'll check those out too. Yes we know Gallatin is not exactly next door to Nashville but we figure there ordain "excursion" days after we get settled in. And if you are familiar with good food shopping sites across the border in Kentucky we'd like to hear about those too. desire most of the people who frequent this place we have a fondness for trying what's off the beaten track - and that doesn't have to be Dean and Deluca either! We're very much looking forward to local farmers' markets and such. Thanks again.
Just north of Gallatin in Kentucky is Bowling Green. About 45 mins north on I-65. Exit 22. Last week a Gordon Food function (GFS) just opened here. We stopped by this past weekend and they had the typical bulk items frozen meat and dairy product. I don't much about this arrange but it might interest you. It's not a very large store but packed full of itemsAlso a quick close for BG...... If you tour BG try a bring together of my favorite places for lunch or dinner:The Brickyard Cafe and Mandolin both are located in downtown BG on Chestnut Street. Mariah's Downtown: Montana Grill on Scottsville Rd.:
Thanks kelomaki for the recommendations. My husband says BG is a lovely city and we will both apply trying your favorite lunch and dinner places. GFS sounds desire a fun exploration too. I can hardly wait to move! So many wonderful places in the South to visit that will be just hours away.
Ginny,My question to folks that are relocating to Gallatin TN is always what brings you to this area. We relocated here 11 years ago from Florida and have seen such growth and development. The businesses are flourishing. Let me know just what time frame you are looking at.
Oakland or Berkley Restaurant

 <modified>2007-12-21T08:56+00:00

I'm fly into the oakland airport and want to undergo a great dinner very soon after landing. I was thinking Chez Panisse but their only reservation available is later than I want. Any other suggestion for great food within 20 minutes of the airport? Thanks.
There are lots of great Oakland and Berkeley restaurants but you might be to expand your choice to within 30 minutes of the airport depending on the time of day and the amount of traffic since Chez Panisse can be around 30 minutes from Oakland airport. First did you try both Chez Panisse upstairs and downstairs? If not try the other restaurant and see if a reservation is available at your preferred time. Otherwise the restaurants that I'd recommend are Oliveto (at the same price point and level of fancyness as CP). Eccolo and at lower determine points. Pizzaiolo. A Cote. Dopo. Cesar (both the Oakland and Berkeley outposts) and Wood Tavern. All are discussed a lot on this board so if you do a search you can find out a great deal.
Oliveto or A Cote hands down and about 20 min away best to cut over to the 580 hwy and not take the 880 Hwy then to the 24 Hwy exit Broadway then you have either Oliveto or A Cote on College Ave. That would be the easiest way.
accept with all of Jasmine G's recs. Here's a recent topic that goes into more detail on many of the restaurants she named plus addresses:
Also most of these restaurants have online menus that are updated frequently (some even daily). Worth it to act a look see if anything's especially appealing.
As mentioned -- it really is a drive time issue. Oakland Airport to Chez Panisse could take 45 minutes on heavy freeway and urban driving.
Great food w/i 20 minutes (regardless of time) is iffy. Soizic on Jack London Sq or Tamarindo in downtown Oakland might work. But Chez Panisse or Oliveto are the surest thing.
What restaurant did you eat at on Thanksgiving?

 <modified>2007-12-04T02:44+00:00

If you had your Turkey Day dinner at a restaurant -- even if it wasn't turkey -- gratify share. express us about it here and next year I and anyone else needing a place to eat will look at this post and maybe get ideas.
Me. I ate at Taqueria Coatzingo. It was packed with happy families and instead of being alone I felt a part of a big happy fiesta. Mexican music played nonstop. I had oxtail and press in color act. No turkey in sight but I didn't desire it at all.
I'm not going to actually name the restaurant because I view our undergo as largely our fault and not the restaurant or staff - who by 7:00 PM when we arrived were like walking zombies. I will say that for $220.00 for 2 it was simply not worth it and a big identify as the food was simply pedestrian and disappointing. That price included 2 cocktails. 2 glasses of booze and a 3-course prix fixe menu - from which we elected the turkey & fixings entree.
Against all my best instincts and experiences and comfort hoping and praying that dining experiences on traditional holidays would be so much more than they actually are and after having "just OK but not for the money" experiences at top restaurants for Valentines Day. Thanksgiving. Christmas Eve and Christmas my wife and I have finally end to say no mas!
We ordain comfort go out for those holidays but probably to Chinese or Mexican restaurants or diners - any place else is just too much of a disappointment for the price.
I'll leave fine dining to my usual Tuesday-Thursday routine.
You can toss New Year's Eve into the piss-your-money-away pot (IMO the MOST expensive Holiday dinner with the "understanding" that you get a "champagne toast").. limited menus food tastes as if mass-prepped hours before and function wanting as in wanting to not be there in the first place.
We went to Aurora Brooklyn: 5 course prix fixe for $65 which included a complimentary cranberry mimosa. You also could have ordered each of the prix fixe specials individually and any of the items on the regular menu were also available. The place was packed so a reservation was necessary to get in. I thought the meal was great but one cover too long for me: I would undergo eliminated the pasta course. Also service was a little spotty at times (they completely forgot my preserve's coffee and the leave took forever to arrive). Overall. I'd go back.
I had T-Day dinner at Kabab "Downhill Alert" Cafe. We had the appetizer platter (foul baba humuus falaffel fried frisee apples) blue crabs pumpkin dumplings whole sardines polenta with nip fat and goose liver with bits of sauteed vegetables (crazy good) feed casserole and then five courses of hunt -- poussin mish-mish a whole move whole squab move and nip. Dessert was usual mix of homemade Egyptian desserts with a little store-bought apple pie pecan pie and pumpkin pie.
For this feast we paid less than any of the folks above although I daresay more than Taqueria Coatzingo.
Brian great meal pick. If I was home I would've probably done similar. I eat at my grandparents' house in Queens every year but the turkey is awful and ordered somewhere. Basically. I hit Jackson Heights on the way get pan de bonos for everyone have a few tacos and then head over to a Turkey Day eat where I just eat piles of Italian antipasti and ignore the turkey.
We went to Jay & Lloy'd deli in Brooklyn-brisket sandwiches corned complain sandwiches homemade kasha and potato knishes cut fries pickles cole slaw. 4 cans of soda=$57 + tip. And Lloyd took a Polaroid picture of every table-yep. Polaroid-an old-fashioned deli with caring owners.
Help Needed w/ Restaurant Wedding Gift

 <modified>2007-11-13T22:27+00:00

I need some help with the wedding present I'm planning on getting my brother and his fiancee. I want to get them a $100 gift award to a restaurant so they can enjoy a nice night out once all the wedding madness is over. I should have in mind that I'm a DC hound and only tour NYC occasionally so that's why I be your back up.
My brother travels a lot for bring home the bacon so I thought this would be a great show for them to enjoy when he is back in town and they might want to inject a little romance into their evening.
The problem is I can't remember a whole lot about where they have eaten in the past and really enjoyed. (Their friends undergo proven to be not much back up either---not foodies and therefore don't bequeath every meal every one of their friends undergo ever had in dilate.. like many of us! lol)
I do bequeath my brother mentioning he had 2 really good meals at Artisanal in Murray forge and The Little Owl. Also they went to the River Cafe after he proposed in the Botanic Gardens.. so that obviously holds a special displace in their hearts. I experience for sure that River Cafe is romantic... I don't know about the others. I remember having an incredible meal about 4+ years ago at Artisanal but bequeath very little about the decor. I've never been to Little Owl but have heard the food is excellent.
I was hoping to get a certificate to some place they've been to before and really like so I experience for sure they ordain enjoy the meal.
I'm change state to other suggestions for nice romantic/hint restaurants not to cheesy with delicious food where $100 will make a nice change at the bill. (That of course is the other concern. I was originally going to get a certificate to Eleven Madison since it's alter around the corner from their apartment but I realized this would not be much of a gift since the pre-fixe meal starts at around $80/person.)
Thanks so much for your back up on this one and any recommendations/advice is truly accept!
For any of those restaurants? I really can only drop $100 unfortunatly. I would like to treat them to Per Se if I could drop it but I can't.. can't change surface come close to it.
They'll realize that a $100 gift is actually quite generous coming from me so I'm looking for something where it would act care of the majority of the meal if not the entire meal (probably wouldn't cover booze or drinks but I've been told that that is ok).
Elyssa for $30 you can acquire something called the Entertainment schedule and it contains reject coupons for many dining and entertainment venues. You could buy that for them and include a store of booze or something else related to a great night out. I hope this helps.
I'm not sure your enable award necessarily has to adjoin the entire meal. What you might do is see about giving them them a gift certificate from Eleven Madison's parent affiliate. Union Square Hospitality House which also includes Union Square Cafe. Gramercy Tavern (including the Tavern dwell). The Modern (including the Bar Room). Tabla (including Bread Bar) and color consume. They could then choose whether they be to have dinner eat or brunch at any of these and put the certificate toward the cost of the meal.
Here's another suggestion. The former Urena just re-opened as Pamplona. Since you say they live near EMP this is only a few blocks away. Delicious Spanish/Basque cuisine very nice dress in decor and gentler prices. Depending on exactly which dishes they order and what and how much they drink. $100 could pretty much cover everything.
That's an excellent idea about the Union form Hospitality assort (btw.. for others looking its assort not accommodate) certificate. I might actually end up going with that.
I had a feeling that Artisanal wouldn't be romantic---something about the intense comprehend of cheese lol. Do they undergo a sister restaurant by any chance? Because I conclude desire I ate in a more formal dining room then what I saw on their website.
I've not been to Little Owl but I'm familiar with the space from its previous occupancy by a French restaurant and it is teensy. Obviously. I have no idea what the current decor is desire i e. romantic but the overall ambiance is sure to be hint.
You probably had dinner at Picholine owned by Chef Terrance Brennan which has been known for the longest time for its fabulous cease course. That's what spawned Artisanal. I undergo not been to Picholine since the end makeover toward the end of measure year.
I see that you are now deciding between USHG and Perilla. I'm not surprised at the cordial treatment you received when you called USHG. After all one of Danny Meyer's hallmarks is superb hospitality. I can't comment on Perillas since we've not been there.
I'm sure that whichever restaurant you decide your brother and future sister-in-law ordain appreciate it. beat wishes to them on their upcoming nuptials!
Perhaps it was Picholine. It certainly was more formal then Artisanal and a really wonderful dining experience. Their cheese expert was a treat and I had some serious funky funky cheeses which were a lot of fun. It was fun to communicate to someone so passionate about cheese.
Here are my husband's & my favorites that we eat at w/ drinks for $120 and under (plus a bring together more that come to object). Even though the super-special cause places are more expensive a award to a more affordable place can comfort be a very delicious and well-appreciated romantic night out. See menupages com for detailed menus and other reviews.
Alta - Fun and cozy small plates. Great food; very good cocktails and affordable & interesting wine enumerate. Search here for more detailed reviews. It's a pretty big townhouse inside and the tables aren't too small so it's comfortable and not hard to get a delay unless it's prime Fri/Sat dinner measure. Definitely our favorite place.
Perilla - I evaluate $100 would back up out here a lot. The entrees are $25 - $30. Everything's really delicious and there's still a good be of air over the displace since the chef/owner won the first season of top chef. examine here for plenty of great detailed reviews and it's on a very cute street in the west village.
Blue Ribbon Bakery - this is our favorite eat place (which could be a nice romantic interact) however the eat and dinner options are delicious too. I evaluate the original Blue Ribbon Restaurant would also be in your determine be however I've never eaten there.
Hearth - gets recommended on here a lot though I just tried it on a saturday night and wasn't super impressed. However others seem to like it and $100 would take a good chunk out of the bill.
Degustation - this is definitely a foodie experience. I understand the seating is set up at a answer and you get to see what's going on in the kitchen. I think the tasting menu is around $55. I'm really looking send to trying this one and undergo heard a lot of great things. The selection is heavy on the fish. I would like to get a gift certificate to force me to alter a reservation at this place.
Death & Co - this is a great dark romantic cocktail place in the east village. They also have a menu of small plates that aren't cheap but are really delicious. I evaluate of it as the kind of thing I wouldn't normally interact myself to so it would work as a nice enable. They don't let the place alter up to more than can be seated so it's not a crowded bar. I'm not sure if they take reservations but you leave you number at the door and they label you when a delay's ready.
Also - here's another idea:Since you don't be in.
Not looking for a arrange or anything over the top but a good local place where we can sit and talk.
Perhaps italian perhap american cuisine.
If anyone has any suggestions = would love to hear them.
Go to and take your choose. Don't go to the Anchor Bar! As the pick will probably be on where you stay or what educate you'll find that the command has a geographic locater.
I was there less than a year ago and while it's more of a trap than when I first went about 15 years ago it was comfort great. The food other than wings has slipped. They used to undergo amazing pizza. Now it's just good pizza. That kinda thing.
My inform would be if you've never been and desire wings it's still a destination. It's also kid friendly since you can get pizza and chicken fingers and the like.
Chef's is a good choice food-wise but there is not much else in the area to "see". If you wanna hit the suburbs. Siena and Sonoma Grill both on Main Street in Amherst (Snyder-area) are both mid-range places with good food.
"nice place to act the wife and kids when we go to Buffalo next month to tour oldest at college."
While there are hundreds of fine eateries come any of the colleges. I undergo listed a few that I feel are moderately priced family-friendly and fairly mainstream in the menu offerings. All are locally-owned and not part of a national chain.

New Dongbei restaurant Guan Dong House in Cupertino - anyone been yet?

 <modified>2007-10-25T23:28+00:00

New displace probably not more than 10 days old (in the location where Wolfe Cafe used to be) is a new restaurant Guan Dong accommodate bursting at the seams today during 12:30 when I passed by aka packed to the gills with customers eager to try out the latest and the greatest. This place is in Cupertino Village by the way.
A friend whose dad is from Northern China somewhere said that the beef noodle soup "reminded him of his hometown".
Took a quick be at the menu and this is a Dongbei restaurant. Not many variations for dumplings but a few specialities called feed cakes in English.
Open 11 am to 1 am weekdays. 9 am to 1 am on weekends (sounds like weekend eat/brunch "dim sum" is served aka soy milk fried dough sticks/yoh tieou etc etc).
Are the "corn cakes" wo wo tou (窝窝头)? My brother-in-law was "sent down" to Heilongjiang during the Cultural Revolution and all he had to eat for weeks on end was crudely made wo wo tou. HE'll express them what they can do with their feed cakes!
come up the "corn cakes" are under the menu section Guan peal Specials which in literal pronounciation is guan peal yi kwuo tsu (one pot outside). The corn cakes in Mandarin for the name at least are sticky cakes (tieh bing ze) the 2nd character of pot sticker and mini thick bread/cake as the 2nd and 3rd characters.
If I remember correctly the old Dongbei House in San Mateo had something similar on their menu except it was plain corn cakes which came out tasting exactly like a Southern style cornbread (evaluate Boston merchandise). So GDH serving a potential similar version with salty material in it (aka meats and veg) is a bit interesting. I wish they alter it more desire a bing/flat cover and not a banana cover kinda consistency and thickness.
Guan Dong Style Pork Pancake - (smoked meat)Garlic Chive PastryPot Sticker (in Chinese is hwei tou or return head)Guan peal call Fried Dumpling - sheui jien baoGreen Onion PancakeGuan Dong Fried pancake (chicken beef or pork) - tsow bing - seafood version also availableStewed Pancake (variation of the above)plate Thread Bun Peking Pork/Beef Sandiwch (siao bing)Sesame cover with color Onion (zima da bing) - could be similar to Darda's.
I have little undergo with north(-eastern) Chinese food but I'm always looking to undergo Chinese food varying away from the South (Cantonese).
So measure night we went pretty early around 5:45-5:50 and we didn't have to act for a table of three. Within 15-30 minutes though there were crowds of people waiting outside peering through the window at our delay.
For the three of us we ended up ordering a ton of food:- an order of vegetarian steamed dumplings- color onion pancakes. (tsung you bing)- vegetarian diced tofu in a thick black hit based sauce (sorry I don't bequeath the english nor chinese cater name)- cumin seed bear on a sizzling plate- shredded pork in peking sauce- large pea sprouts (da dou mu)
The veg steamed dumplings were okay. I didn't really focus much on those though. The green onion pancakes were kind of floury (in an undercooked way) and walk. I don't know what type of cover they use to create from raw material the pancakes but my mom thought it tasted like they were using margarine. The tofu cater had a component which we couldn't determine. Since I don't have the cater name in Chinese at the moment. I can't give much more information. But the tofu was silky and firm standing up to the thick strong black hit act pretty well. The cumin seed spiced bear on the sizzling plate was one of my favorites. Sliced onions and bell peppers were also cooked with the lamb strips and sprinkled with red chili flakes. On appearance one would think that the dish would be very spicy but it was mild alter with the cumin very apparent. The shredded pork in peking act was served with a type of cold change state bean curd wrappers about three to four inches form. The waiter instructed us to put some of the pork strips and scallions in to the wrapper and eat it like that. I've never had this dish before so I can't say if it was executed come up but I enjoyed it a lot. After I went domiciliate. I found the recipe for this dish in one of my Chinese cookbooks and it looks like a standard Chinese infuse and glaze with the exception of "sweet hit paste" which I am not sure if I've tasted before prior to that night. The big (the stalks are big so you don't have to chew for five minutes before swallowing) pea sprouts were book as one would evaluate.
I would definitely go back to try more of their North Chinese food. A lot of the customers are from mainland China; I guess there are very few if any. North (Northeastern) region Chinese restaurants in the area.
Went there a bring together of weeks ago and the displace was packed. Lots of mainlanders there so thought it should be really good. We ordered 4 dishes among the 3 of us. We started with the cold alter noodles with veg. chose 3 items from the cold answer upfront then got the Corn cover with.
Korea’s largest fast-food chain. BBQ Chicken which has 2,500 stores there (a 20 percent market share) and is apparently on a mission to advance McDonald’s in worldwide ubiquity by the year 2020 is hitting St. Marks Place this Friday and opening three other stores in the city— two on Northern Boulevard (at 150 Place and 147th Street) and one on Seventh Avenue near FIT According to Andy Pan franchiser of the St. Marks location the store’s employees have been thoroughly trained in the fashion of frying drumsticks teriyaki sticks chicken nuggets and the like in olive oil the affiliate’s label. “We sent each manager back to Korea to the Chicken University to get educated.” That’s right— BBQ has a Chicken University.
Not only this but BBQ shares a building with Tkettle a bubble-tea arrange also omnipresent in Asia and which Pan says has a few advantages over Saint’s Alp the bubble-tea sight over on Third Avenue. Throwing down the glove in much the same way. Pan told us that his teas are exceed than most because instead of mixing hot tea with ice which causes the tea to become watered down. Tkettle cools its tea over the cover of seven hours. Plus they cook their tapioca every two hours rather than just using a morning’s supply throughout the day which makes them “very chewy and fresh.”
